AILET
All India Law Entrance Test
AILET or the All India Law Entrance Test is an entrance exam held by the National Law Institute New Delhi. The National Law Institute was established in 2008. The aim of this institute is to impart legal knowledge covering all aspects of law and to prepare the students to face the major challenges in their careers.
The National Law Institute offers a total of eighty seats for its five year integrated B.A L.LB (Hons) program. A total of seventy seats are fixed for local candidates and ten seats are for foreign nationals.
Local and Foreign Candidates
Local Candidates: The age of the candidate must be below 21 years however the age limit of those who belong to the scheduled tribes and scheduled castes can be 23 years. Candidates from all over the country are eligible to apply if they have passed the senior secondary examination (10+2) or any other equivalent exam recognized by the university with a minimum of 50% marks. Candidates who will appear in the final year exam can also apply. Out of the 70 seats, 15% are reserved for scheduled castes, 7.5% seats are reserved for scheduled tribes and 3% are for candidates with physical abilities.
Foreign Candidates:The National Law Institute has ten seats for foreign nationals. The foreign students are exempted from appearing the admission test and they can apply on merit for direct admissions. However they must have a score of 65% in the qualifying exam.
Paper Pattern for AILET
The duration of AILET is 150 minutes or one hour and thirty minutes and the candidates are expected to answer a total of 150 questions on various topics. Each question carries one mark and so the total weightage of the paper is 150 marks.
The students will be tested on their language kills, general knowledge, math abilities, reasoning and legal aptitude etc. The subjects on which the candidates are tested and the distribution of marks is as follows
- English Language: 35 marks
- General Knowledge: 35 marks
- Reasoning: 35 marks
- Legal Aptitude: 35 marks
- Elementary Mathematics: 10 marks

Postgraduate Courses
The University also offers L.LM and Ph.D programs. There are a total of 20 seats available and admissions for L.LM is based on merit and only those students who clear the entrance test and interview by proving their proficiency in English language and displaying a thorough knowledge of all aspects of law can get admitted to the course. Five additional seats are allocated for foreign students. The foreign nationals are exempted from taking the entrance test but they must hold an L.LB or an equivalent degree.
The candidates who have cleared L.LB from a recognized university with a minimum of 55% marks can apply for admission. Candidates with physical disability and those belonging to the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe need only 50% marks to apply. Those candidates appearing in the final year of L.LB can also apply.
The test carries 150 marks and lasts 90 minutes. The test is divided into two parts, objectives and essay type questions. There are a total of 100 objectives each carrying one mark and one essay type question of 50 marks. The test is based on the student’s knowledge of L.LB as the objectives and the essay type question are based on Law of Torts, Law of Contracts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Legal Theory. After clearing the test, the candidates need to appear in an interview; those clearing the interview with a higher merit are offered admission.
