Common Law Aptitude Test
CLAT or the Common Law Aptitude Test is a common test held for admission to undergraduate courses at eleven national law universities. CLAT is also the requirement for admission to post graduate courses of Law (L.LM). Students clearing the test are eligible for admission to NALSAR, WBNUJS, NLU, HNLU, NLSIU, GNLU, RGNUL, CNLU, NUALS, NLIU* and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow.
The WBNUJS conducted the CLAT in 2011. The eleven universities offer a total of 1,500 seats for the five year integrated L.LB course.
Eligibility for the under graduate Program
The integrated course lasts five years at the end of which the students are awarded B.A/L.LB, B.Sc L.LB, B.Psc L.LB. B.BA L.LB or B.Com L.LB (Hons) degree.
The candidates who have secured at least 50% marks in the intermediate level or any other course equivalent to the standard 10+2 level can apply for admission. Those awaiting intermediate results can also apply. The age of the candidates should not be more than 20 years for general category. Seats for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes and other backward castes have also been fixed with the least required marks being 45% and the maximum age limit being 22 years.
Paper Pattern
This entrance exam carries a total of 200 marks and the candidates have to answer 200 objective type questions in two hours. The students are tested on their general knowledge, proficiency in English language, basic math skills and reasoning. The subjects on which the student will be quizzed plus the break up of marks is as follows
- English (including comprehension) 40 MARKS
- Current Affairs/General Knowledge 50 MARKS
- Elementary Mathematics 20 MARKS (to test numerical ability)
- Legal Skill 45 MARKS
- Logical Interpretation/Reasoning 45 MARKS
The CLAT is a tough test and the candidates should study seriously for it. A list of recommended books can be downloaded from the net. Those seeking help can join a coaching center; the list of recommended coaching centers can also be seen on the internet.
Eligibility for L.LM Program
Out of the above mentioned eleven universities, only nine offer a post graduate L.LM course. The course is spread over a period of two years. The candidates applying for the L.LM program must be an L.LB graduate with a minimum of 55% marks from any recognized university. The students must also have a 50% score in the higher certificate exams. The candidates belonging to the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward castes must have a minimum score of 50% in the L.LB exam. Candidates awaiting results of their L.LB finals can also apply. The candidates should not be less than 20 years of age.
Paper Pattern
The CLAT test for L.LM is of two hours in which students have to answer 62 questions. The paper is divided into two main parts; objectives and subjective.
The student’s knowledge of the technicalities of law is tested as they are required to answer questions based on
- Law of Contracts
- Law of Torts
- Legal Theory
- Constitutional Law
- Criminal Law
The student will have to attempt 50 multiple choice questions (MCQ) of one mark each, ten short answer type questions; these carry 5 marks each and two essays of 25 marks each. As the admission is purely on merit, the students must have a high score in the CLAT exam to get admission in the desired university.
