JMET
Joint Management Entrance Test
JMET stands for Joint Management Entrance Test, which is done before an applicant can be admitted into a post graduate degree program in management. This is an examination for qualification into a postgraduate program and currently the IITs in Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee offer this entrance test for their programs in management.
After one has done the JMET qualifying examination, he is then allowed to apply to any institutions of choice for as long as he is eligible (which will be determined by the exam). The applications are limited to the institutions that use the JMET as a standard for their admission as well but the number of applications is not limited and the applicant can apply for as many programs he or she is eligible to apply to.
After the JMET has been done and applications to participating institutions made, it is upon each institution to shortlist candidates who fit its qualification criteria and conduct interviews of potential candidates however if feels fit. Selections processes differ, with some preferring methods like personal interviews, group interviews or even further tests but it is upon the institution to decide from this point onwards.
Those who qualify after sitting the JMET are supposed to make contact with the institutions that have shortlisted them for details of the admission procedures, which will not be given by the administration of the JMET. It is expected that the candidates will respond to the qualification procedures that have been given by the institutions that have shortlisted them.
One can make an application even when he is in the last year of a degree course and will be admitted but this will be subject to them completing their respective degree courses. Keep in mind that you will only be allowed to sit the exam if you have proven using provisional transcripts that you are almost through with your degree course. Not all degree courses are admissible, only those that the JMET board has sanctioned will be admissible. The passing grade for those students who are still working on their bachelor’s degree will be determined by the respective universities they have applied to, but most of them allow a passing grade of at least 60% for one to sit the JMET. Admission of applicants who are yet to finish their degree course depends on respective participating institutions. Keep in mind that not all institutions allow applications before the completion of a degree course.
For example, the Shailesh J Mehta School of management allows admission to candidates with a first class bachelor’s degree in engineering or a first class master’s degree in science with 60% passing grade in the bachelor’s degree.
The departments of industrial and management engineering in Kanpur’s Masters of Business Administration program is eligible to any person with a bachelor’s degree in engineering with an aggregate of at least 60%. The Vinod Gupta School of management’s Masterof Business Administration (MBA) program allows for provisional admission of those who have not yet finished their respective degree programs. The degree programs that are considered eligible are master’s degree in science, economics or commerce. The three hour JMET exam paper consists of 120 questions in logical reasoning, verbal communication, quantitative ability and data interpretation.
The JMET application for 2011 submission is going to be done online, meaning that the application forms can also be found online. Submission procedure depends on the respective institution. An applicant will need to have a digital image of his photo taken and his signature. The payment of the application fee can be made after the submission of the application or else the application will be canceled.
