KEAM tests the aptitude of prospective students who want to join medical, agriculture, engineering and architecture degree courses in Kerala. This is a state examination that has been held in high esteem since the time it was started. It filled a niche; when there was no common entry examination for all the colleges and universities in this south Indian state. Like many other state-based common examination, its purpose was to give applicants a relatively easy time when making applications to undergraduate and technical postgraduate professional courses in Kerala. The benefits have been saving time and money for the thousands of applicants. Applicants have to be residents of Kerala and most of all Indian citizens. If one is not a native of Kerala, one has to have resided or studied in Kerala for at least three years.

There are two separate examinations under KEAM, the engineering test and the medical tests, each one of them lasting two and a half hours. The first paper in the engineering tests is a combination of physics and chemistry and the second one is a mathematics paper. As for the medical test, the first paper is a combination of chemistry and physics and the second paper is a biology paper. Each paper has 120 questions required to be answered in two and a half hours. Candidates are advised to be extra careful as there are penalties for choosing the wrong answer. Given multiple questions will be provided for the candidate with every right answer earning four marks and every wrong one costing a half a mark to the candidate. Architecture course applicants need to make sure they have sat the national aptitude test for architecture alongside KEAM.
