MAT
Management Aptitude Test
This is another management aptitude test done in May, September and December by the all India Management Aptitude Testing Service (AIMATS). It tests the admissibility of its entrants into MBA and other postgraduate business study programs. Most participating institutions offer postgraduate programs in business aside from the MBA like postgraduate programs in technology and management, information technology, postgraduate diploma in management, international business, HR, finance, marketing and operations. The scores in MAT are acceptable in many Indian business institutions.
MAT is an exam that is reputable, having been conducted for more than 10 years. It has been validated after having been studied independently by people and is an entrance test for many business programs in India. Tests are provided in centers located all over India so it is not restricted to people from a certain state etc. This is one of the few Indian exams that do not have any geographical boundaries and even applicants can apply and sit for them while abroad.
There are five main papers in MAT, language comprehension, mathematical skills, critical reasoning, data analyses and Indian and global environment section. The language comprehension is critical, since you have to display an understanding of the medium of communicating - English. Your mathematical skills will be put to the test in the mathematics paper and if you have done a bachelors degree in business, there is nothing hard about this paper. You need to be generally aware of your financial mathematics and some little of high school mathematics to pass this section in the critical reasoning; one should expect to be tested in his ability to come up with a logical and practical solution to a situation. Data analysis applies some mathematical principles. The Indian and global environment section expects the candidate to be aware of his surrounding and is mainly about current affairs. All the sections have 40 minutes. The last section is not as important as the first five as considerations are made since not all applicants are Indians. The final scores of the examinations are dependent on the first four sections of the paper and the current affairs section will be upon the university to decide whether to incorporate or not. Some universities will incorporate them according to the individual who has made an application; incorporation is done mostly when applicants are Indian nationals.
Skills that will be tested by the MAT test include administrative skills, the ability of the person to control staff and implement policies. Business control skills will be tested as well, to determine the skills of the applicants in setting performance standards and abiding by them. Applicants will be tested n their supervisory skills and the standards they adhere to when they give work to their subordinate. It is upon the applicant to display some responsibility for the outcome of his work, even when a lot of people are working below him. This aspect of management will be tested as well. Organization is a big aspect of management so applicants will be expected to have show skills in coming up with short-term and long-term goals as well as definite schedules which they can adhere to. They will be tested on their skills in making instant and circumstantial decisions as well. Applicants are expected to be good communicators, and since English is the main language of communication in the business world, will be expected to have good written and spoken English. They have to be able to interpret data and come up with accurate predictions depending on any set of instructions. Candidates will be shortlisted depending on their performance in the test and will be expected to follow-up on the admission criteria of their universities to gain admission to them.
