PGCET

Post Graduates CET

This is an examination conducted by the CPAC, the Central Post Graduate Admission Committee. PGCET stands for Post Graduate Common Entrance Test. Eligible candidates are those who have graduated with a bachelor’s degree in polymer technology, rubber technology, plastics technology, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, textile, chemical engineering and fiber technology. This is a purely science based paper which selects only the top performers who qualify for it. There is a large demand for professionals of this kind in India although not as much as other professionals and so this exam is not popular as the many entrance exams in India. Even then, it is respected for its reliability in choosing professionals for the programs.

The subjects that are going to be there in the examination are fluid mechanics and statics. This will cover subtopics such as the types of fluids, stress and velocity gradient relation,   laminar and turbulent flow, variation of pressure with height, measurement of fluid pressure and Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids among others.

The basic concepts of chemical engineering thermodynamics will be tested; like the closed and open systems, intensive and extensive properties, general statement of first law of thermodynamics, P-V-T behavior of pure fluids, processes involving ideal gas law, van-der waals equation, state and properties, state and path functions, first law for cyclic process, equations of state and ideal gas law, constant volume, constant pressure and constant temperature.

Chemical process calculations include mole fraction, ideal gas law calculations, concept of mole, compositions of mixtures of solids, liquids and gases and general material balance equation for steady state. Polymer science paper will test the candidates in the classification of polymers, chain polymerization, copolymerization methods of polymerization, definition of polymerization and step polymerization.

The subject of polymerization will include definition of reaction  rate,  different  theories of reaction  rate,  kinetics of linear step  reaction  polymerization, steady state  assumption, order, molecularity and  activation energy. Processing technology is one of the subjects that are going to be tested by this paper. The subjects include extrusion; blow molding, rotational moulding, injection molding and compression molding. The 2011 examination has already been done and any applicants should be looking foreword to next year’s examination.

Applicants who are in their final year of their degree courses can sit for this exam. They are supposed to have scored an average of 60% in their final degree exam and prove their eligibility with provisional transcripts from the institutions of higher learning they belong to. Any other standards that they have to adhere to will be determined by the various institutions they will apply to. Application forms can be taken from the universities the applicant wants to apply to and from this point on the candidate will be required to fulfill the specific conditions that have been set by the institutions. For some, the 60% passing grade has been relaxed for students in the category of special needs. Again, this is not uniform in many colleges and one has to find out for himself. One can get the application forms by post by writing a demand letter to that effect. Application forms can also be gotten online which is cheaper, faster and even better than getting by post. Applicants are advised to take time filling their forms since forms that are not well filled will not be considered. Application fees have to be paid upon the submission of the well filled application form. Fees can be paid using credit card or cash, depending on the flexibility of the candidate. Again candidates who will not pay the application fee in time will not be considered by the close of the deadline.
