Eligibility for the Punjab CET is a secondary school certificate conducted by a recognized board. The candidate must have passed well in English, physics, chemistry and mathematics with an aggregate of 60%. For those who have already done diploma courses in engineering and technology, a 60% pass is required. No candidate above the age of 22 will be allowed to sit this examination but special needs candidates will be considered and the rules of age will be relaxed. For special needs students, the maximum age limit is 25 years.
For those who want to join Punjab universities to study technical courses, they have to have passed well in high school or graduated from recognized universities with 60% aggregate. Chemistry, biology, biotechnology and computer science are the combination subjects that are needed for applicants who desire to pursue technical courses. For architecture course applicants, 50% aggregate is needed, with mathematics being one of the main subjects of eligibility. Those who have done diploma courses are eligible, but need to have passed with at least 50% aggregate to be considered. For those who want to pursue pharmacy degree courses, a pass in secondary school is needed, with a pass in compulsory subjects like mathematics, biology, computer science, physics and chemistry. Those who have a diploma in pharmacy from institutions recognized by the government board of the Punjab CET examinations will be considered if they have passed with an aggregate of 50%.
The examination consists of five parts, with the first three testing the aptitude of the applicant in mathematics, chemistry and physics. This is one of the most important parts of the examination, since it carries the bulk of the marks that will be awarded in the examination. The questions in this part are short, descriptive and require short answers therefore it is not very involving. The fourth part of the test will test the proficiency of the person in the Punjabi language. This is an exam that is highly restrictive and is used to deliberately select the natives of Punjabi to join the colleges in Punjab. It is eligible for Punjabis who have settled in other parts of the country too. The residents of Punjab will be given a special priority when this examination will be conducted since this is an examination mainly meant for its natives. For those who are not necessarily natives but have lived and studied in Punjabi for at least three years, or whose parents and guardians are employees of the central government or state government, they will be allowed to sit this examination but will have to pass the Punjabi paper. The last section of this examination is only for those who want to pursue architecture and is meant to test the candidates’ skills in mathematics and architecture. The application forms can be taken from Punjab universities. Applications that have been well filled will be considered if they are received by the administration of the Punjab CET by the end of April 2011. Punjab University will publish the list of candidates who have passed well and will inform them personally of their qualification.
The Punjab CET will be held on 2nd May 2011 in colleges affiliated to Punjab Technical University, Amritsar, Punjab Agricultural University, Guru Nanak Dev University, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Punjabi University, Patiala. Students applying for the 15% category have to make their registrations online.
