Tata Institute of Social Sciences

TISS stands for the Tata Institute of Social Sciences; a school of higher learning that is now 75 years old. Initially it was not called TISS but “Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work”. It was established as an institution that would engage in the study of Indian social studies and problems and was the first one of its kind in India. After several years of development in educational programs and infrastructure, TISS started offering more than just social work education and now offers health and hospital administration, human resource management courses and personnel management among others. It was renamed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 1964.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences has been more than a university; it has worked towards the promotion of social welfare and justice through education, social intervention, contribution to social welfare and peace and professional response to national calamites. Over the 75 years of its existence, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences has contributed to policy planning, human resource development in matter of rural and urban development, human rights and industrial relations.  It has given recognition to women, children and Dalits among others.

This institution has earned a lot of respect from the Indian government, the UN and the non-governmental sectors in and outside India. Eligibility for admission into the Tata Institute of Social Sciences for postgraduate degree is respective bachelors’ degrees. As for the master’s degree course, one needs to fulfill the requirement of having a bachelor’s degree in the respective area of study depending on the requirement of the masters program. A master’s in public health will increase the value of your professional CV. For those who want a master’s degree in public health from this renowned institution, they are required to have a master’s degree in any discipline or a bachelor’s degree in medicine. If one does not have either of these two, he is at least expected to have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and at least two years of experience in the public health sector. Those having a master’s degree in any discipline or a bachelor’s degree in medicine will need to have at least some experience, although this is not crucial.

For the people who want to pursue a diploma in gerontology at the center for lifelong learning, one needs to have experience in the clinical, social and development fields. NGO personnel who have been working in the fields of geriatric services are eligible and so are administrators of human service organization and corporate sector personnel. The center for lifelong learning offers diplomas in counseling and eligible candidates include NGO personnel working in the areas of health education and the corporate sector. Eligibility for the certificate in rehabilitation counseling is a bachelor’s degree in any discipline with at least 40% of the total aggregate marks required. Candidates who have graduated with social work, psychology, or special education will be preferred.

The examination for admission into the Tata Institute of Social Sciences includes a written test consisting of the general knowledge, analytical reasoning, and the program based test which lasts for an hour and is the second part of the written test. Group discussions and personal interviews will be held in Mumbai for the shortlisted candidates of all programs except the MA in social work and rural development whose discussions and personal interviews will be held in the Tata Institute of Social Sciences Tuljapur campus. In the personal interview the candidate is expected to be acquainted with the program he is applying for. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences qualification exams for 2011 were done in 2010 and it is expected that the dates for 2012’s programs will be given in 2011.
